MDMA therapy when psychotherapy alone is not enough
For a lot of people with the diagnosis PTSD or one of the anxiety disorders, talktherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy is not enough to reduce the symptoms. This group of unlucky people are now able to make use of MDMA therapy in The Netherlands, for example in Amsterdam. In this article we’ll explain why MDMA therapy works better than regular therapy in case of PTSD, anxiety disorders, OCD and addiction.
How MDMA therapy works
MDMA therapy is not merely about the administration of a drug. It’s a combination of the preparation, the drug and talk-therapy and the integration. This altogether create a unique therapeutic experience. During the MDMA session this are the effects of MDMA:
Enhanced Emotional Engagement: MDMA increases the release of hormones and neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, that play key roles in trust, bonding, and well-being. This can help patients feel safe and comfortable during MDMA sessions, allowing them to engage more deeply with their emotions.
Reduced Fear Response: MDMA decreases activity in the amygdala, the part of the brain that processes fear. This can help patients revisit traumatic memories without being overwhelmed by fear or anxiety. The reduced anxiety levels allows the clients to talk more openly about the difficult parts of life, giving their selves the chance to process it better.
Improved Insight and Perspective: By inducing a state of heightened introspection and empathy, MDMA can help patients gain new insights into their experiences and patterns of thought.
The latest scientific research on MDMA therapy
The latest research on MDMA therapy for PTSD has been promising. The largest clinical trial to date found that the MDMA treatment was safe and effective in a diverse group of participants. The study involved 104 people diagnosed with moderate to severe PTSD. After three therapy sessions spaced a month apart, 71.2% of the participants who received MDMA no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD, compared with 47.6% of the placebo group. This makes MDMA therapy on average 50% more effective as regular psychotherapy.

Psychedelic session as therapy
LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide), psilocybin, and MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) are psychedelics that can be used for therapeutic purposes. Although they have unique pharmacological properties, they all produce profound changes in consciousness and can enhance emotional processing.
LSD and psilocybin are both classified as classical psychedelics and work by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain. They are known to produce mystical-type experiences and can enhance introspection, creativity, and empathy. Research has found that LSD and psilocybin can be used to treat anxiety, depression, addiction, and end-of-life distress. LSD was first used in psychotherapeutic settings in the 1950s and 1960s, while psilocybin received more attention in the 2000s with the revival of psychedelic research. One key difference between LSD and psilocybin is the length of their effects – LSD lasts for 8-12 hours, while psilocybin effects typically last for around 6 hours.
MDMA, on the other hand, is classified as an empathogen and works primarily by increasing the release of the neurotransmitter serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. It is well-known for its ability to enhance social connection, reduce fear, and increase empathy. MDMA-assisted psychotherapy has shown promise in treating PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and was designated by the FDA as a “breakthrough therapy” in 2017. Unlike LSD and psilocybin, the effects of MDMA are not as long-lasting, with effects lasting for around 3-5 hours.
All three of these substances have been shown to be effective in treating mental illnesses, especially when used in conjunction with therapy. The experience produced when taking these substances can vary, but the common theme is a heightened emotional state. This enhanced emotional state can be both positive and negative, depending on the individual’s current situation, the setting, and the therapist’s skill. During therapy sessions, clinicians use these substances to facilitate deep introspection and emotional processing, allowing individuals to access repressed feelings and memories and to gain new insight into their lives.
Research on the efficacy of these substances is ongoing, with many promising results. A study conducted at Johns Hopkins University found that psilocybin-assisted therapy could help cancer patients reduce depression and anxiety. A separate study conducted at Imperial College London found that psilocybin therapy could help individuals with long-standing depression. A study conducted in Canada found that LSD-assisted therapy could reduce anxiety and enhance mood in patients with anxiety disorders. Similarly, research has found that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy can help veterans with combat-related PTSD.

What is mushroom therapy?
When people talk about Mushroom therapy they are referring to psychedelic therapy using magic mushrooms. Magic mushrooms contain the active substances psilocybin/psilocin and are used for tripping and during the trip one can work on problems, fears and insecurities that are present the subconscious. It’s the psilocybin that has been converted to psilocin that has the most effect on the temporary effects of magic mushrooms, but still we call it psilocybin therapy.
Legal mushroom therapy in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, the use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms is illegal under the Opium law. However, the use of psilocybin-containing truffles, also known as magic truffles or sclerotia, is tolerated under specific conditions. This distinction arises due to the legal framework and interpretation of the law.
Psilocybin mushrooms and psilocybin truffles are different parts of the same organism. Psilocybin mushrooms typically refer to the fruiting bodies, or the “mushrooms” themselves, which contain psilocybin. Psilocybin truffles, on the other hand, are formed underground as compact masses (sclerotia) that contain psilocybin. This happens when circumstances are bad to grow the mushroom above the ground
The legal situation surrounding psilocybin in the Netherlands is complex. While psilocybin mushrooms are classified as illegal, psilocybin truffles aren’t mentioned on the list of illegal drugs. This has resulted in a unique legal landscape where the sale and consumption of psilocybin truffles are legal and we can work with the psilocybin truffles. Psilocybin truffles generally have lower concentrations of psilocybin compared to the magic mushrooms. To compensate the difference in concentration we use more grams of magic truffles.
What can truffle therapy do?
Several scientific studies support our vision based on experience. Our trip therapy can be used for, among other things:
Improve low self-esteem
Mild addictions remedy
Psilocybin is very similar to the body’s own serotonin. Serotonin provides the opposite of depression. That is, namely, contentment. With increased stimulation of the serotonin receptor, the brain goes into a state of hyperconnectivity. This also happens to a lesser extent when you start dreaming. During the state of hyperconnectivity, various parts of the brain can communicate (better) with each other. Problems in the subconscious can become visible and it can get a place.

A psilocybin ceremony is a special experience where you make a psychedelic journey with the help of magic truffles under the guidance of an experienced tripsitter. Magic truffles are natural products that contain psilocybin, a substance that can change your consciousness and bring you in contact with yourself, nature and the universe.
A psilocybin ceremony can have different goals, depending on your personal situation, wishes and intentions. Some people do a truffle ceremony to relax, have fun, stimulate their creativity or sharpen their senses. Others do a truffle ceremony to grow, heal, learn or transform. In this article, we will discuss the best 5 goals for a truffle ceremony and how they can help you achieve a better and happier life.
1. To know and accept yourself better
One of the best goals for a truffle ceremony is to know and accept yourself better. A truffle ceremony can give you insight into who you are, what you want, what you feel and what you need. You can discover your strengths and weaknesses, recognize your qualities and talents, face your shadows and blocks, express your wishes and dreams and experience your true essence. You can also learn to love yourself, to forgive yourself, to respect yourself and to trust yourself.
Knowing and accepting yourself better can help you improve your self-esteem, your self-confidence, your self-expression and your self-actualization. It can also help you make better choices, set healthy boundaries, pursue your passions and fulfill your potential.
Psychedelic research has shown that psilocybin can increase self-compassion, self-transcendence and openness to new experiences. It can also decrease self-criticism, self-consciousness and ego-inflation. Psilocybin can help you access your subconscious mind, where you can find hidden aspects of yourself that may need healing or integration.
2. To process and release your emotional blocks and traumas
Another great goal for a truffle ceremony is to process and release your emotional blocks and traumas. A truffle ceremony can help you get in touch with your emotions, both positive and negative. You can express, understand, accept and transform your emotions. You can also release old pain, grief, fear, anger, shame or guilt that you may have been carrying for a long time. You can also heal traumas that may have left their marks on your body, mind or soul.
Processing and releasing your emotional blocks and traumas can help you improve your mental health, your emotional balance, your physical well-being and your spiritual growth. It can also help you free yourself from negative patterns, beliefs or behaviors that may limit or harm you. It can also help you create more space for positive emotions, such as joy, gratitude, peace and love.
Psychedelic research has shown that psilocybin can enhance emotional processing, memory reconsolidation and neuroplasticity. It can also reduce amygdala activity, inflammation and stress hormones. Psilocybin can help you activate your emotional brain regions, where you can revisit and reframe traumatic memories that may cause distress or dysfunction.
3. To overcome your fears, stress, depression or addiction
A third excellent goal for a truffle ceremony is to overcome your fears, stress, depression or addiction. A truffle ceremony can help you find out the causes of your fears, stress, depression or addiction and address them. You can learn to cope differently with your thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may hinder or hurt you. You can also learn to be more relaxed, positive, optimistic and grateful. You can also learn to live more in the here and now, without worries about the past or the future.
Overcoming your fears, stress, depression or addiction can help you improve your quality of life, your happiness level, your productivity and your relationships. It can also help you regain control over your life, reclaim your power, restore your balance and renew your hope.
Psychedelic research has shown that psilocybin can increase serotonin levels, brain connectivity and neurogenesis. It can also decrease rumination, pessimism and anhedonia. Psilocybin can help you deactivate your default mode network (DMN), where you may get stuck in repetitive or negative thoughts that may cause anxiety or depression.
4. To feel more connected with nature, people and life
A fourth wonderful goal for a truffle ceremony is to feel more connected with nature, people and life. A truffle ceremony can help you feel more connected with everything that lives. You can appreciate the beauty, the harmony, the diversity and the intelligence of nature. You can also experience the love, the empathy, the friendship and the support of the people around you. You can also discover the wonder, the mystery, the adventure and the fun of life.
Feeling more connected with nature, people and life can help you improve your social skills, your environmental awareness, your moral values and your existential meaning. It can also help you reduce your loneliness, your alienation, your selfishness and your nihilism.
Psychedelic research has shown that psilocybin can increase nature relatedness, social connectedness, altruism and spirituality. It can also decrease narcissism, materialism, individualism and atheism. Psilocybin can help you activate your mystical brain regions, where you may feel a sense of oneness, awe or bliss with all that is.
5. To explore and develop your spiritual dimension
A fifth amazing goal for a truffle ceremony is to explore and develop your spiritual dimension. A psilocybin ceremony can help you get more in touch with your spiritual side. You can ask questions about the purpose, the meaning or the source of life. You can get answers from your intuition, your higher self or a higher power. You can also have experiences that go beyond the normal boundaries of time, space or reality. You can also reach transcendental states of consciousness, where you may feel a sense of unity, ecstasy or enlightenment.
Exploring and developing your spiritual dimension can help you improve your intuition, your wisdom, your creativity and your inspiration. It can also help you expand your consciousness, your perspective, your potential and your evolution.
Psychedelic research has shown that psilocybin can induce mystical experiences, religious conversions, spiritual emergencies and psychedelic insights. It can also enhance meditation, prayer, yoga and other spiritual practices. Psilocybin can help you access your transcendent brain regions, where you may encounter visions, entities or realms that may challenge or enrich your worldview.

Truffle ceremony of truffel ceremonie
Magic Truffles have been found to be an effective tool for those seeking an introspective journey towards their inner wisdom. This journey can be facilitated through a magic truffel ceremony or Psilocybin therapy. People who experience physical complaints, addiction problems, depression, fears, bereavement and post-traumatic stress disorder, often struggle to find the core of the problem. However, with the use of Magic Truffles, one can delve deeper into the layers of the self to explore and address their internal conflicts. A Psilocybin magic truffle ceremony can provide a safe and effective space for individuals to face, solve, or start to address their problems, providing relief and allowing individuals to fully engage in life again. Furthermore, an inner journey can facilitate spiritual development, offering insights into one’s awareness of life issues, and a deeper understanding of the self. Embrace the powerful insights that come with turning inwards, and watch as your inner world transforms before your eyes.
The magic truffel
Magic Truffles are known for their psychedelic effects and can be a powerful tool for inner-journey work. The psychedelic magic truffel ceremony at Triptherapy is a safe and expertly managed experience, which can help address conditions such as depression, trauma, and addiction. The active ingredients in Magic Truffles are Psilocybin and Psilocin, which have been extensively researched and found to stimulate the growth of new branches and connections between brain cells. These effects can promote healing and help users gain new insights into their thoughts and emotions. Magic Truffles come from Dutch soil and are legal in the Netherlands. Psilocybin is a naturally occurring substance that is converted in the body into Psilocin, a compound related to DMT or dimethyltryptamine, which is one of the strongest visionary psychedelics. Unlike many other psychoactive substances, Magic Truffles are easily broken down by the body, leaving no toxic residues. Although often called truffles, they are actually a type of fungus called sclerotia, which is a compact mass of hardened fungal mycelium that contains food reserves, allowing it to survive in extreme conditions.
The ancient usage of psilocybin
Psilocybin is the psychoactive compound found in the magic truffel and has been used by ancient cultures and native peoples for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence points to the use of psilocybin throughout Central and South America as early as 9000 BCE. The Mazatec people of modern-day Mexico have a rich history of using psilocybin-containing mushrooms in their religious ceremonies, where they are used to induce altered states of consciousness.
Psilocybin was also used in the religious practices of the Aztecs, who referred to the mushroom as teonanácatl, meaning “god’s flesh”. The Aztecs believed that consuming psilocybin allowed them to communicate with their gods and gain spiritual insights. In addition, the use of psilocybin was also common among the ancient Mayans, who referred to it as “the flesh of the gods”.
The modern magic truffel ceremony
At Triptherapy, we believe that the magic truffle ceremony is an incredibly powerful tool for healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. However, it’s important to approach this experience with care and respect, in order to ensure the safest and most positive outcome possible.
To prepare for the ceremony, we recommend spending some time reflecting on your intentions for the session, and setting an intention that resonates with you. We also recommend abstaining from alcohol or drugs for at least 24 hours before the ceremony, and eating light and healthy foods to prepare your body and mind for the experience.
During the ceremony, our experienced facilitators create a safe and supportive space for you to explore your inner world. We provide a comfortable environment, including cushions, blankets, and eye masks to help you relax and let go of any distractions. Our staff is on hand to guide and support you through any challenging moments, and we encourage you to trust the process and surrender to the experience.
After the ceremony, we provide integration support to help you incorporate the insights and revelations you’ve gained into your daily life. This may include one-on-one coaching sessions, group support, or follow-up resources to help you stay on track and continue your personal growth journey.
At Triptherapy, we’re committed to helping you discover the power of the magic truffle ceremony in a safe and supportive environment. We invite you to join us on this transformational journey, and trust that you’ll emerge with a greater sense of clarity, purpose, and self-awareness than ever before. The first step is filling in the online intake so that we can check for contra-indications.

Lack of amino acids can lead to depression
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Multiple amino acids linked together are called peptides and multiple peptides linked together are the polypeptides/proteins or otherwise called proteins. Hormones and neurotransmitters can also consist also of amino acids. Each protein has a different sequence and amount of certain amino acids. Although depression is often a mix of complex factors, a lack of certain amino acids can potentially contribute to depression. The amino acids most often then on the low side are those involved in forming serotonin and dopamine:
Tryptophan: Tryptophan is an essential amino acid required for the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood and sleep. A deficiency in tryptophan can potentially lead to decreased serotonin production and disturbed mood.
Tyrosine: Tyrosine is a precursor of dopamine, norepinephrine and adrenaline. These neurotransmitters play a role in motivation, reward and energy levels. Tyrosine deficiency can potentially lead to decreased production of these neurotransmitters, which can contribute to symptoms of depression.
What amino acids are there?
In nature, there are about 500 different amino acids. The human body basically uses only 20, which we call fundamental amino acids. Of those 20, we can make 11 from other amino acids or we recycle the amino acids we get from food. The other 9 amino acids we really need to get through food and we call them essential amino acids.
Herewith a list of fundamental amino acids
*Essential amino acid **Semi essential amino acid
What does a healthy body need?
A healthy body is never deficient in the amino acids that the healthy body needs to function. In general, people generally do get enough non-essential amino acids. Therefore, it is often the essential amino acids that a person is deficient in because they cannot be made from other amino acids when deficient.
Protein requirement per day
In order to meet our daily protein requirements and thus amino acids, we actually need to have some protein in every meal to ultimately meet our needs. An adult with a normal exercise level needs about 1 gram of net protein per kilogram of body weight per day. So if someone weighs 75kg, he or she should eat 75 grams of protein containing the right amino acids.
Some people need more protein
Top athletes and especially in strength training
People who practice heavy physical work
People with serious illnesses
People in recovery/operation
Pregnant women and breastfeeding women
To lose weight
Not all proteins contain the right proportions of amino acids
The body can most optimally utilize a protein from food if it best matches the amino acid profile of the human body. These are proteins that are very close in structure and ratio of essential amino acids to those of the body’s own proteins. The more amino acids present, the better. So the essential amino acids must come in through the diet to eventually make all 20 amino acids our body needs.
How high quality a protein-rich food is is indicated by the term Biological Value of proteins. Animal proteins generally have a higher Biological Value than vegetable proteins, because animal proteins regarding structure and amino acids used are more similar to our own proteins. Therefore, it is even more important for vegetarians to eat proteins (or combinations of proteins) that result in a high Biological Value!
Casein (milk protein)
Foods you can combine
If different protein sources are eaten together, the amino acids that are deficient in one product may be replenished by the other. Some well-known combinations include.
Legumes, acidified dairy, meat, fish, cheese or egg
Oats, rye, egg or sesame seeds
Egg, Wheat or acidified dairy products
So it is advisable to alternate foods in order to get the right amino acids. Keep in mind that some foods score well on protein content and less so in other areas. Nowadays it is easier and more beneficial for the body to buy a jar of essential amino acids and BCAA and eat a healthy diet. This way you get the good things without the disadvantage of some animal products.
A word about protein preparations
If you really want to be sure you are getting the right amino acids and in the right amount, there are a few supplements such as protein powders that are recommended.
Whey hydrolisate is a pre-digested milk protein with high absorbability and high bioavailability of 140. For athletes and people with increased protein needs, this protein is ideal for getting the right amino acids in high amounts.
Pepto Pro is pre-digested casein protein which is divided into peptides and these are even more absorbable, but the biological value is slightly lower than Whey.
Silverback Protein is a plant-based pea protein supplemented with additional essential amino acids so it has as good a biological value as Whey, but plant-based and lactose-free.
Essential amino acid mix is a mix of amino acids to supplement the protein from your diet without actually adding extra protein. This option is especially useful for when you think you are eating enough protein but not the right amino acids. Some manufacturers also add glutamine and BCAA to the essential amino acids, which is our preferred option. You can also add them yourself (via nutrition).
Attention to these essential amino acids
Lysine, involved in concentration ability, calcium absorption, bone tissue growth, collagen building and immune system support, especially with susceptibility to viral infections such as cold sores, it is important to have ample lysine in your diet .
Histidine, especially in children who grow quickly or people with a lot of anxiety.
Sources: white of egg, meat, poultry, wheat germ, peanuts, sesame seeds.
Not essential yet often lacking
Glutamine, is not essential but can be essential in cases such as leaky gut, addiction sensitivity or ammonia-scented sweat. Glutamine deficiencies can lead to all kinds of allergies and intolerances like cow’s milk, soy, nuts, peanuts but also to deficiencies of GABA, our body’s own “tranquilizer.
Specific amino acids against depression, compulsions, addictions and inflammatory diseases
There are a number of forms of amino acids that have been proven to be very effective against certain conditions. These specific forms of amino acids often have an extra atom (group) to the molecule so they get to certain places in the body better. Below are the specific forms of amino acids that work extra well.
N-acetyl cysteine works against addictions, premature aging, inflammatory diseases, depression, compulsive acting (OCD), stress and also increases fertility in men and women. N-acetyl cysteine can help fight:
Mucus in airways and/or sinuses, respiratory diseases (respiratory infections, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, asthma, sinusitis, hay fever, pulmonary fibrosis)
Chronic liver diseases
HIV/AIDS (improving glutathione status)
Immunosenescence in the elderly (aging immune system with consequent decreased resistance and chronic low-grade inflammation)
N-acetyl cysteine is not found in our diet, but the body makes it from L- cysteine. In many cases of the pathologies described above, too little N-acetyl cysteine is made from L- cysteine and then supplementation is a solution.
The daily dosage of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is 1000 mg and as a therapeutic daily dose is approximately 2000 mg. Ingestion is best taken on an empty stomach with water.
Caution with medications. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) may increase the effects of antidepressants, nitroglycerin and anticoagulants. Consult your doctor first if you are taking any medications.
Acetyl-L-carnitine works particularly well against depression and inflammatory diseases. Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) increases the synthesis of serotonin (low serotonin actually causes depression) and it makes the mitochondria, the energy factories in cells, work better so that it prevents depression from exhaustion. Acetyl-L-carnitine can help with the following disease states:
Aging (decreased endogenous carnitine synthesis)
Low carnitine intake with diet (vegetarianism, veganism)
Diabetes mellitus, obesity, metabolic syndrome Neuropathy (diabetes, chemotherapy, HIV medication)
Age-related macular degeneration
Hyperthyroidism (not hypothyroidism!)
Sports (improving endurance)
COPD (for increasing exercise capacity)
Hepatic encephalopathy, liver cirrhosis
Non-alcoholic fatty liver and steatohepatitis
Renal failure/kidney dialysis
The recommended dosage is 1 to 3 grams per day and on an empty stomach preferably not in the evening.
Caution with medications. Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) may increase the effects of antidepressants, nitroglycerin and anticoagulants. Consult your physician first if you are taking any medication.
Nutrition and physical health is part of Trip Therapy
A healthy body gives a greater chance of a healthy mental state and vice versa. Psychedelic therapy combined with a healthy lifestyle significantly increases the chance of fighting the symptoms of mental symptoms. Here are some reasons why this combined approach can give a chance of positive results:
Neuropsychological effects: Psychedelics, such as psilocybin (in magic mushrooms) and lysergic acid di-ethylamide (LSD), have potentially therapeutic effects on the brain. They can enhance communication between different brain regions and make new connections, which can lead to increased insight, introspection and emotional well-being. These effects can address mental symptoms and help the person develop new perspectives.
Emotional processing: Psychedelic therapy can trigger deep and intense emotional experiences. This can enable people to recognize and cope with ingrained patterns, negative thoughts and traumatic memories. It can help reframe experiences and promote emotional processing, which in turn can lead to relief from mental symptoms.
Increase self-insight and introspection: Psychedelic experiences can induce a sense of connection and oneness with the self, others and nature. This can increase self-insight and promote a deeper understanding of one’s own mental state. Through this introspection, people can become aware of underlying causes of their mental symptoms, such as unprocessed traumas, negative beliefs or destructive behavior patterns.
Strengthening therapeutic processes: In a therapeutic setting, psychedelics can enhance the effectiveness of other therapeutic approaches. It can facilitate communication with therapists, break down barriers and speed up therapeutic processes. Psychedelic therapy can also increase overall acceptance of therapy, making people more open to change and growth.
Healthy lifestyle to complement: A healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, exercise, adequate sleep and stress management, can promote overall mental health and well-being. By embracing a healthy lifestyle, people can increase their physical and mental resilience, which can contribute to the success of psychedelic therapy. In addition, a healthy lifestyle can help support long-term positive changes and prevent relapse.

MDMA therapie is mogelijk in Nederland

LSD is the strongest psychedelic
LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide) is considered one of the most powerful psychedelics because of its potency, duration and effects. Some more experienced psychonauts choose for LSD therapy because it’s the strongest psychedelic. Here are some reasons why LSD is considered the strongest known psychedelic:
Potency: LSD is highly potent and can produce very powerful effects at doses of only a few micrograms (µg). For example, a typical dose of LSD is about 100-200 µg, while the effects of psilocybin are usually felt at doses of 10-30 mg and DMT at doses of 10-60 mg. This means that LSD is about 500 times more potent than psilocybin and DMT.
Trip duration: LSD trips can last up to 12 hours while psilocybin and DMT usually have a shorter duration. This long effect can make the experience of LSD deeper and more intense than that of other psychedelics.
Effects: LSD is known for its ability to produce very intense and complex visual, mental and emotional effects. These effects can vary greatly from person to person. The most common effects include changes in perception, heightened introspection, mystical experiences and strong emotional reactions. These intense effects make LSD a unique and potentially overwhelming experience.
The reason why LSD has a strong effect and long duration is that LSD fits into the same receptors as DMT and psilocybin but does not come out easily due to the shape of the molecule. Furthermore, the liver can break down LSD in and slow way and these breakdown products are excreted through the urine. This is different from DMT and psilocybin.
LSD acts on receptors in the brain
The effect produced is mainly related to the serotonergic receptors. These 5-HT receptors are distributed in the brain and the binding of LSD on these receptors changes the excitatory conductance in the brain. LSD has affinity for these receptors:
5-HT2A receptor: LSD binds primarily to this receptor, which is involved in regulating perception, cognition, emotion and consciousness. Stimulation of this receptor by LSD can lead to changes in visual perception, intensification of emotions and changes in consciousness. It can also increase activity in the prefrontal cortex, which can lead to changes in thinking and a sense of connection with the environment.
5-HT1A receptor: LSD can also bind to this receptor, which is involved in regulating anxiety, depression and mood. Stimulation of this receptor may lead to reductions in anxiety and depression, although it is not clear to what extent LSD stimulates this receptor.
Other 5-HT receptors: LSD can also stimulate the 5-HT1D, 5-HT5A and 5-HT6 receptors. Although the exact effects of this stimulation are not yet fully understood, it may be related to the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of LSD.
Increased glutamate and BDNF due to LSD
Beyond the effects a person may perceive, the chemical messengers in the brain change during the use of psychedelics such as LSD, DMT or psilocybin. Increased stimulation on 5-HT2a receptor releases more glutamate and BDNF.
Glutamate is the most important excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain and plays a crucial role in communication between nerve cells. When more glutamate is released, it can lead to increased synaptic plasticity and the formation of new synapses between nerve cells. This, in turn, can lead to improved cognitive functions, such as learning, memory and information processing. However, glutamate deficiency is rare and usually measured only in neurological or psychiatric disorders.
BDNF is a neurotrophin that promotes the growth and survival of nerve cells. It is often considered an important factor in neuroplasticity and can help strengthen synapses between nerve cells. When more BDNF is released in the brain, it can lead to improved cognitive functions and the brain’s ability to process and learn new information. BDNF is also associated with protecting neurons from degeneration and promoting neurogenesis, or the growth of new nerve cells.
All in all, the release of glutamate and BDNF in the brain may lead to improved cognitive functions and the brain’s ability to adapt to new environments and situations. This may be beneficial, for example, in the treatment of conditions such as depression, where reduced synaptic plasticity and BDNF levels have been observed.
The image to the right shows the mechanism by which psychedelics affect neurochemistry and neurotransmission. BDNF plays a significant role in treating depression especially in men, but also in women. More BDNF and glutamate could theoretically provide symptom relief in some neurodegenerative disorders such as MS and Parkinson’s.
The experience a person has on LSD depends on the person using it, the circumstances and most importantly the dosage. Indeed, a very low dose of LSD will give little to no change, while a dose of 200 micrograms can give a full trip. The higher the dosage the more the effects will be and thus the triplevel.
